Call for Stewards!

Welcome to PNNC water test season. You can help out your fellow club members and friends who are entering by being a steward for them. Reserve the 2nd weekend in September (9/13, 9/14).

This year PNNC is holding (assuming dogs are entered in each event):
5 tests on Saturday:
For the Newfies: Water Dog, Water Rescue Dog, and Water Rescue Dog Excellent
For All Breed Dogs: Water Dog, Water Rescue Dog

– 3 tests on Sunday:
For the Newfies: Water Dog, Water Rescue Dog, and Water Rescue Dog Excellent
(No All Breed tests on Sunday)

The sequence of the tests is the same for both days and is as shown above. Notice that the All Breed tests follow the Newfie tests and are not offered on Sunday.

A full day for a steward is typically about from 8:30 to at least 3:00. However, if fewer dogs are entered, it’s a shorter day; if more dogs are entered, it’s a longer day. On Saturday, there’s a potluck BBQ dinner held at the test site, so there’s a good reason to stay.

Pick from the positions listed below. We’ll need at least 20 stewards, assuming that most folks are willing to do multiple roles, stay all or most of the day, and come both days.

  • Set-up stewards (early arrival-by 7:30-is required)
  • Beach stewards
  • Gate stewards
  • Rowers
  • Ballast/Anchor in boat
  • Kayakers
  • Calling stewards
  • Silent stewards, including unconscious victim

Check-in time for Water Dog stewards is by 8:30. At 8:45, judges will give these stewards their instructions and answer questions. At 9:00, the Water Dog test starts.  The other tests will follow in order with just a short break in between each test.

Check-In time for stewards for the other tests will depend on how many dogs are entered for each test. After entries close on Sept 1, better estimates about the schedule will be available.

Stewards are welcome to enjoy the free breakfast snacks, beverages, and lunches supplied by our hospitality team.

First-timers are welcome as well as experienced stewards.

Need a refresher about the exercises? The Newf Club of America has a beautiful set of videos showing all the exercises for each test level available here:

Need to practice being a steward? Join the group training at Horseshoe Lake (test site) on Wednesday mornings. Confirm day and time with Kim White.

Contact your Chief Steward, Kyle Smith, to reserve your spot. Let me know your preferred role, what days you are available, and if you have time constraints. My goal is to try to accommodate your schedules as much as possible. It’s important that you enjoy your experience of being a steward.

Thank you,
Kyle Smith
